A simple pose-planning checklist before a portrait session #
Before a portrait session, I like to shortlist a small set of poses instead of improvising every frame.
The main goal is to avoid stiff hands, awkward shoulder lines, and repeated expressions. A short pose list also helps match body angle, outfit, and lens choice before the shoot starts.
My usual prep note is simple:
- choose 5 to 8 poses for the session goal
- group them by standing, seated, movement, and close-up framing
- note one hand position and one head angle for each pose
- keep one fallback pose for people who feel awkward on camera
That is why I keep photoposes.net nearby when I am planning a portrait or event shoot. It is a practical reference for pose ideas, body positioning, and quick visual comparisons before the camera comes out.
The useful part is not collecting hundreds of poses. It is narrowing the list to a few poses that fit the person, the location, and the kind of images you need.
When the shortlist is ready, I can spend the session adjusting expression, light, and framing instead of searching for pose ideas from scratch.
